EMPOWERING YOUNG CONSERVATIONISTS

VIEW empowers young conservationists by supporting communities in north-central Kenya and connecting students with wildlife, science, and conservation careers. With a focus on female youth, we worked with local schools to provide hands-on education, mentorship from women in wildlife health, immersive field trips, and scholarships to help students further their education. These experiences build confidence, spark curiosity, and help girls especially envision a future in conservation. By fostering leadership skills and offering real-world opportunities, this initiative empowers young women to become conservation ambassadors in their communities.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Samburu community dancing in colorful attire

In Samburu, Kenya, VIEW is helping build the next generation of conservation leaders by supporting girls from rural communities and connecting them to science, wildlife, and career opportunities in conservation. With funding from Conservation Nation, the program engages students with hands-on lessons, mentorship, and immersive field experiences designed to spark curiosity and build confidence.

A core part of the initiative is introducing students, especially girls, to people working in conservation, veterinary medicine, and wildlife health. These role models not only help students understand what a career in conservation looks like, but also challenge gender norms and expand what girls believe is possible for their futures. Field trips, like last year’s visit to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, give students a front-row seat to wildlife rehabilitation and daily conservation work. These experiences help make science and conservation feel real, relevant, and within reach.

The project also supports students with scholarships to continue their education beyond primary school. By reducing financial barriers and providing long-term mentorship, VIEW aims to ensure girls have the tools and support they need to pursue their ambitions.

Together, these efforts are creating pathways for young women to step into leadership roles in conservation and become advocates for wildlife within their own communities. By investing in education, mentorship, and real-world experiences, this project is helping ensure that local women have the knowledge and opportunities to shape the future of conservation where they live.
