ABOUT US

OUR STORY

Veterinary Initiative for Endangered Wildlife (VIEW) was founded in 2012 by wildlife veterinarians Dr. Deborah McCauley and Dr. Gretchen Kaufman to address a critical need and solve the missing piece of conservation: wildlife health.

The catalyst for VIEW’s creation came when Dr. McCauley was working with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. She was called to investigate a bighorn sheep die-off near Yellowstone. Upon arrival, her team witnessed an emaciated ram collapse and took its last breath. When they looked up, they realized it was just one of dozens of dead rams scattered across the landscape.

Ultimately, 90% of the herd perished from pneumonia, a disease silently spread from nearby domestic sheep. This devastating loss is not an isolated incident but reflected a broader, global crisis where preventable diseases are decimating vulnerable wildlife populations.

While traditional conservation efforts have made important strides in protecting habitats, preventing poaching, and addressing climate change, wildlife health has often been overlooked. Yet disease when undetected, untreated, or unprevented, can unravel decades of conservation progress in a matter of weeks.

VIEW is the only conservation nonprofit solely dedicated to integrating proactive health strategies into global wildlife conservation efforts.

WHERE WE WORK &
WHY IT MATTERS

VIEW’s work began in Nepal, partnering with local veterinarians, wildlife professionals, and government agencies to strengthen health systems for wildlife. We’ve helped build diagnostic labs, supply hospitals, train local professionals, and create safe wildlife holding facilities. As a result, Nepal has adopted national protocols and policies for wildlife health—and become a model for what’s possible.

Since then, VIEW has expanded to Africa, Asia, and North America, bringing our wildlife health model to a growing network of field partners. Every project is built in collaboration with local experts to ensure long-term, locally led solutions.

OUR IMPACT

From capacity building and veterinary training to diagnostics and disease surveillance, VIEW is helping protect endangered species across the globe. Our network of projects continues to grow as wildlife health is built into conservation efforts.
